Proud To Be a Furry!![]() It seems like there can't be any kind of interest / hobby / lifestyle without somebody getting their knickers into a twist about it. Lately, the very diverse set of interests known collectively as "furry" have been getting some bad press. And, as furries as a group are not used to getting any press, to be getting only the bad kind has some members of the furry community behaving in strange ways. Some furries, and no I'm not going to name names, have actually been put into fear of their jobs because of their association with furrydom (or more specifically, some of the more extreme sexual behaviors engaged in by some furs, and exaggerated with gusto by a brand of faux journalist who gives muckrakers a bad name). Apparently, in the USA in the 21st century, what people do in the privacy of their own homes is still not considered "nobody's business but their own." It has reached the stage where some people are inclined to distance themselves from things furry, in the hopes of avoiding this backlash ... or, in other cases, giving a different name to what they do in the hopes that it will somehow fool anyone. Well, that's their choice, and if they think it will help, then more power to them. I personally do not subscribe to this belief. No bigot ever changed his mind about the object of his hatred, when the object changed their name. People who don't like furries, and the yellow journalists who pander to them, don't like funny animals, anthropomorphics, weres, or therianthropes either. Given that these people aren't going to like me anyway, for no better reason than simply being who I am, I see no reason why I should throw away a perfectly good term just to please them. I like the term "furry." It suggests to me a happy, cozy, good-natured sort of fun that I have always associated with my enjoyment of anthropomorphic literature, art, etc. It's also handy, descriptive, and easy to say. I'm keeping it. Those yahoos can't have it. I'm not going to go into what is or isn't furry here; it's a big topic that's constantly being debated elsewhere. But for what it's worth, The Suburban Jungle is quite definitely a furry comic, and I am proud of it. If anyone wants to give me flack about that, they're welcome to; my e-mail address is right there on the page for everyone to see. But they'd better be prepared for me to give them flack in return. Because I'm proud to be a furry, and no amount of attack articles or salacious crockumentaries will change that. --John "The Gneech" Robey, January, 2002 Are you proud to be a furry? Feel free to
